SASAMI – “Honeycrash”

If I were to cast indie musicians that we’ve covered on this site in a fighting game – Super Smash Bros or Street Fighter style – I think SASAMI would definitely be the one I’d choose to wield a guitar as a baseball bat. She’s the only one who could get away with it without it feeling overplayed or cliched… don’t @ me. After making a detour into metal on 2022’s Squeeze, SASAMI is back today with “Honeycrash,” the artist’s bid for melodramatic arena-rock.

Like the name implies, “Honeycrash” is explosive, delicious, and sweet – walloping its listener with a wave of ferocious, screeching guitars. SASAMI’s cool delivery is probably one of the most “action hero walks away from an explosion in slow motion” sonic juxtapositions that I’ve ever heard. It’s a song that depicts its protagonist braving the adversities to finally triumph – rarely does a chorus soar with such freedom like this (“Honey, don’t count me out / Even when the heavens sour,” “Honey, crash into me / Like a storm into the sea / Like blood on the silver screen / We can make it through all that”).

Along with the release comes a music video from SASAMI’s frequent collaborator Andrew Thomas Huang (Squeeze), who puts SASAMI in front of a reflective stage depicting high-resolution, cosmic elements twisting behind her. It’s another wonderful realization for the artistic duo, and if “Honeycrash” is any indication of what’s to come for the yet-unannounced LP3, there’ll be more wild times to come.

“Honeycrash” is out now via Domino.

SASAMI will be playing a headlining show in Los Angeles on June 5th and will also be joining DIIV on tour for the rest of June.
