Mura Masa and yeule – “We Are Making Out”
Much like another musician who is making the rounds in the indie music circuit, site favorite musician yeule (and the creator of my personal AOTY last year) is branching out from their singular world to infect other tracks with their glitchy style. Already in the last few months, we’ve seen them tackle a cover of an instant-classic indie pop song and cover an iconic masterpiece for a cult-classic film in the making. So it may come as a surprise that their latest is with none other than electronic producer Mura Masa.

Centered around yeule announcing that they are making out all over London (shoutout to Dalston, DLR, and the Bak-er-loo Line), “We Are Making Out” breaks yeule out from their indie pop/punk container and catapults them into the world of EDM. “We Are Making Out” is one of those songs that follows the Daft Punk tradition of fusing cold, uncanny-valley like robot vocals with a bumping good time. yeule’s whispery growl is akin to that of a stuttering cyborg on the verge of malfunction, but somehow those low-battery sputters still emit a subtle warmth of recognition. Mura Masa takes those and runs with it — crafting a glitchy, rumbling EDM banger that will probably see a lot of play in London, underground raves, and Internet themed dance parties.
I’ve once described yeule’s vocals as ASMR-like, and that comes into full display here. “We are making out with a nosebleed / We are making out because you drew / A picture of my heart on my guitar / And accidentally said ‘I love you’” is one of those lines that scratches just the right part of my brain. The outro, which returns the track to a feeling of melancholy, feels like it’s a direct interlude taken from softscars. And when you hear yeule’s hidden, slowed “I love you” stretched out in the ether at the end, it feels just like magic — on the dancefloor or off.
