Laufey charms us all on the heartfelt “Best Friend”

With all that’s going on in the world, most people could understandably use a break, or at least a small well-deserved respite of joy to brighten up their day. Whether it’s in a refreshing sip of coffee, a swing in a hammock, or a sunny afternoon with loved ones, a small interlude would do us all some good right now. Luckily, rising star Laufey’s new single, “Best Friend,” is sure to put a smile on your face.
Though she’s only released two songs so far, 21-year old Chinese-Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey is no stranger to the public eye. Her debut single, “Street By Street,” was praised far and wide on social media (attracting attention from Billie Eilish and Willow Smith) and eventually hit #1 on Icelandic Radio. Follow-up single “Someone New” only continued building the musician’s stardom, bringing her soulful vocals to a song she once described as being about a “modern Cinderella… but she just broke up with somebody and needs to get off Instagram.” Now a student at Berklee College of Music, Laufey has been hard at work even in quarantine–culminating in her debut project Typical of Me EP, which will be released on April 30th. All that effort has paid off: “Best Friend,” the third single off of that project, evidently shines.
Though the track’s production is relatively simple with Laufey’s vocals and guitar leading the majority of the track, silky vocal harmonies, delicate piano accompaniment, and carefree vocal ditties sprinkled throughout showcase Laufey’s prowess with complex jazz composition. Time seems to slow down when listening to “Best Friend,” and listeners will find its lo-fi style drums and soothing electric guitar charming. On top of that, her sweet, and at times silly lyrics have a personality of their own–conjuring up the playful jabs and warm memories you only get from being around those you love (“But I promise that I love you / Even with that hairdo / I’m sorry I made fun of it / It’s not your fault it looks like shit,” she teases at one point).
Overall, “Best Friend” makes for a sweet, simple song about unperturbed happiness. It’s one that invokes coffee shop vibes on a lazy afternoon, or nostalgic memories with a best friend. And in a time when we could all use a break, Laufey’s single is sure to hit the spot.
