Fazerdaze – “Motorway”
After a brief multi-year hiatus between her certified indie pop classic Morningside and Break! EP, Fazerdaze (the indie pop project of Amelia Murray) came back in a big way on last year’s underrated Soft Power. That album featured a ton of shimmery synths, fuzzy pedals, and contained earworms for days. It’s also worth pointing out that “Cherry Pie,” one of my personal favorite Fazerdaze tracks, has some of Murray’s most euphoric work on it. Go stream it (and its amazing video) if you haven’t already!

But now, Murray is back with “Motorway,” a follow-up track that encapsulates big feelings in the big city. Washed out, fuzzy guitars drench “Motorway” with a sense of queasiness, shaping and complementing the murmurs of Murray’s voice. Though there’s a big build-up towards the end of the track, there’s no big car crash finale here. Instead, the track buzzily meanders much like the weaving motorways that it describes before abruptly ending. That trepidation looms largely while the city swallows you whole. I’d say that’s a pretty accurate depiction of the “false sense of freedom” that she says the track is about!
The release of “Motorway” also comes with a Fazerdaze Aug/Sep US tour announcement. She’ll be playing quite a few shows opening for the Pixies and Spoon, while headlining a few as well.
“Motorway” is out now via section1. You can purchase a special “Motorway” bundle that includes mp3 files, a demo, a signed postcard among other things on the Fazerdaze website.
